Does ChatGPT Add Watermarks to Generated Images? (2026 Update)

OpenAI is testing visible watermarks for free-tier ChatGPT image generation. Here's what we know about the ImageGen watermark and C2PA metadata.

With ChatGPT's GPT-4o model now capable of generating images, many users are asking: does ChatGPT add a watermark?

The answer is nuanced — and evolving.

Current Status (April 2026)

As of April 2026, here's what we know:

Free-Tier Users: Testing Visible Watermarks

OpenAI is testing a visible "ImageGen" watermark on images generated by free-tier ChatGPT users. This was discovered through code analysis of the ChatGPT Android app, which references an "Image-Gen-Watermark-for-free" feature.

Key details:

  • The watermark appears as an "ImageGen" label
  • It's being tested — not officially rolled out
  • The code suggests users cannot remove it themselves
  • OpenAI hasn't publicly confirmed or denied this feature

Paid Users (ChatGPT Plus): No Visible Watermark

ChatGPT Plus subscribers currently receive images without any visible watermark. The testing code includes a "Save image without watermark" option, suggesting paid users will continue to get clean images.

All Users: Invisible C2PA Metadata

Regardless of plan, OpenAI embeds C2PA Content Credentials in all generated images. This is an invisible, cryptographically signed metadata standard that includes:

  • Timestamps
  • Software identification
  • Origin markers
  • Provenance chain

Unlike IPTC metadata (used by Midjourney), C2PA is cryptographically signed and tamper-evident.

How This Compares to Other Platforms

| Platform | Visible Watermark | Invisible Watermark | |----------|------------------|-------------------| | ChatGPT (free) | Testing "ImageGen" | C2PA metadata | | ChatGPT (Plus) | No | C2PA metadata | | Gemini | Yes (sparkle logo) | SynthID | | Midjourney | No | IPTC metadata | | Grok | Yes ("GROK" text) | Unknown | | Doubao | Yes ("豆包AI生成") | Unknown | | DALL-E 3 | No | C2PA metadata |

What This Means for Users

If OpenAI rolls out the "ImageGen" watermark for free users:

  1. Free users will need a watermark removal tool for commercial or polished use
  2. Paid users will be unaffected
  3. The watermark may serve as an upsell mechanism to ChatGPT Plus

We're monitoring this closely and will add ChatGPT watermark removal to PixelClean AI as soon as the feature is officially deployed.
